Speak Ukrainian with Vern & Lettuce!
One of the themes of my picture book The New Neighbours is trying to make newcomers feel welcome. Our town recently had a meeting, trying to figure out how we as a community could best help people who were fleeing the war in Ukraine. Since Stuart and I speak Russian, we thought we could learn some Ukrainian - which has a lot of similarities - to try to help out. And I thought it might be fun to make a little language starter video, for children who might be trying to learn a few phrases to speak with new classmates at school.
Here's how you say 'Hi', 'Nice to meet you', and 'thank you' with Vern the sheep and Lettuce the rabbit!
(Here's the link if it's not showing up)
Feel free to use this video in schools or wherever it's helpful! I've downloaded a couple apps - DuoLingo and SpeakEasy Ukrainian - which both have free versions you can try out to see if they might work for you, if you'd like to learn more.
