so sad…

I just made this for my sister. Real quick, ’cause there’s lots of catching up to do now she’s gone. But I wish she just lived down the street, it’s hard when she has to go home. Boo hoo…

Okay, now I’m going through my loot from last weekend in Brussels. Here are some cool books I picked up, mostly from my one of my all-time favourite bookshops, Tropismes. It’s not far from the Grand Place, in the Galerie des Princes. The first two floors are all picture books and the top floor has comics. I always find French language picture books very inspiring. The creators come up with stuff that’s amazing, seemingly almost without a thought to whether children will actually like it. And I wouldn’t be at all surprised if their children rise to the challenge. When I stayed with a family in Paris a few years ago, I was very impressed with how their children seemed to ‘get it’, even though the books they were reading were very sophisticated.

I picked up copies of:
*Petites Météorologies by Anne Herbauts (gorgeous flap book. I love her stuff.)
*Ma Maison by Delphine Durand (cool format with interesting lettering)
*La tortue géante des Galapagos by Rébecca Dautremer (wacky paintings in lovely muted palettes)
*Cyrano also illustrated by Rébecca Dautremer
*Rouge jaune noire blanche illustrated by Carll Cneut (intriguing in a sparse, painterly kind of way)
*L’Archiviste by François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters (I discovered Schuiten’s incredible, architecturally inspired comics artwork on my last trip, both times at the supermarket near the metro station where I was staying.)
