Here’s my entry for Matthew Reidsma’s High Maintenance Machine contest. I’ve been following this comic for a little while and it’s just getting better and better!

I’ve written some more Write Away reviews for several South African books, here are two of them: The Gift of the Sun and The Dancer. When I first opened the packet and saw the covers, I didn’t think I’d like them at all. But I’m glad that writing a review forced me to spend more time studying them, they really grew on me. I’m terrible that way; when I go to a bookshop, I’ll usually only give a book about three seconds to catch my eye, which doesn’t do much justice to the illustrators’ work, and none at all to the writers’. I think this review thing is stretching me in a good way, getting me to admire things I might not even notice in my usual clueless book shop rampages.
