On previous trips to \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wigtown\">Wigtown\u003C/a>, Stuart and I have rated \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dumfries_and_Galloway\">Dumfriesshire\u003C/a> the most beautiful place in the world: the light, the hills, the stone walls, the trees... sometimes the landscape's so beautiful it almost hurts. So it was a no-brainer to accept our invitation from the \u003Ca href=\"http://www.wigtownbookfestival.com/\">Wigtown Book Festival\u003C/a>. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/sarahlizceci-576ec854b7.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd boy, did those festival people get behind us! On Friday, they bused in \u003Cb>600 KIDS (!!)\u003C/b> to hear me talk about comics and \u003Ca href=\"http://www.jabberworks.co.uk/new/vernlettuce-book.html\">\u003Ci>Vern and Lettuce\u003C/i>\u003C/a>, along with Scottish poet \u003Ca href=\"http://www.lizniven.com/\">Liz Niven\u003C/a> and writer \u003Ca href=\"http://cecijenkinson.net/\">Ceci Jenkinson\u003C/a> from North Wales (above). Just as \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/319280.html\">in Edinburgh\u003C/a>, one of the best parts of the festival was meeting other authors. Let me introduce you to one of the newest faces on the comics scene, 15-year-old Scottish comics creator \u003Cb>Angus Dunn\u003C/b>: \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/angusdunn-409b322f94.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's a taster of some of the work he's been coming up with, really funny stuff, including an ongoing gag where his friends walk up to him while he's buried up to the neck in concrete. We had a chat in the Authors' Lounge about blogs and websites and things, and I'm hoping Angus will post some of his work online soon. Keep an eye out for this guy! (Funny, I drove every day in the USA, but I never drive in Britain.) We took the beautiful coastal route, past \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetheart_Abbey\">Sweetheart Abbey\u003C/a>...\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/sweetheartabbey-c651537828.jpg\">\\r\n...and \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caerlaverock_Castle\">Caerlaverock Castle\u003C/a>.\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/caerlaverock-825ba19332.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI was thrilled that my gig on Saturday morning (which was packed-out - thanks, guys!) came just before another big event by \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polly_Dunbar\">Polly Dunbar\u003C/a>. Polly's already a bit of a legend in picture books with \u003Ci>\u003Cb>Penguin\u003C/i>\u003C/b>, a deceptively simple but powerful book about a little boy who desperately wants his toy penguin to be a real friend, and after being eaten and puked by a lion, discovers that the penguin's silence doesn't mean all their time together has been for nought. (The clincher is a comics speech bubble, which particulary endears it to me; here's \u003Ca href=\"http://www.writeaway.org.uk/node/4334\">a short review\u003C/a> I wrote about it for Write Away.) Polly has the gift of being able to draw beautifully under pressure; the kids at her event were tiny, not old enough to have learned things like raising their hands or not climbing on the flip chart stand, and their parents were smiling indulgently at them from worryingly far away. But Polly handled it with grace. I'd love to learn how to draw so well in front of people; I tend to give the flip chart only half my attention because I'm thinking so much about the audience, and it never looks quite as good as something I'd draw in a sketchpad. (Practice, I guess.) The room is gorgeous and they had food and drink out for us at all times, including - I couldn't believe it - LOBSTER! I don't think I've had lobster since I was a teenager... Wow.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/wigtownlobster-5fac504f26.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's \u003Cb>Helena\u003C/b> (whom I met on our \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/254231.html\">last visit\u003C/a>) and two of the fab people who made my event go so well: organiser \u003Cb>Sarah Cowan\u003C/b> and storyteller \u003Ca href=\"http://renitaboyle.com/about/\">Renita Boyle\u003C/a>, who left us all breathless with her almost flagrant rendition of \u003Ci>I knew an old lady who swallowed a fly\u003C/i>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/helenasarahrenita-4182605c0b.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nOur friends' farm where we stayed was looking beautiful. They've planted loads of rare breeds of apple and pear trees, which are finally coming into their own with fruit, and built some lovely new dry stone walls. Here's the listed mill building on their property, and some cool-looking oat milling machinery inside, which used to be driven by water wheel.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/newmilnfarm1-2b422989d6.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's Angus and Stuart inspecting one of the sheds. According to Angus, sheds are a big deal in Wigtown; houses are one thing, but sheds are where all the important stuff is kept, and people can talk forever about them. Angus didn't do this, but it \u003Ci>was\u003C/i> a very good shed.
