But thanks to \u003Ca href=\"http://hayleycampbell.com\">Hayley Campbell\u003C/a>'s tip-off, I did get to go to the excellent panel event\u003Ci>The Art and Science of Time Travel\u003C/i>, featuring \u003Cb>Audrey Niffenegger\u003C/b> (here's an \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/301205.html\">earlier blog post I made about her\u003C/a>), \u003Cb>Stephen Baxter, John Gribbin, Paul Cornell\u003C/b> and hosted by \u003Cb>Jo Fletcher\u003C/b>, who recently set up her own sci-fi and fantasy imprint, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.quercusbooks.co.uk/blog/2010/11/25/quercus-announces-new-imprint/\">Jo Fletcher Books\u003C/a>, at Quercus. Here are some doodles I made during the talk:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/timetravelpanel-2679e50849.gif\">\\r\n\\r\nI have a lot of reading yet to do in the sci-fi genre, so I was writing down book titles as they mentioned them. It was interesting when Audrey asked the audience if they had a choice, if they'd rather time travel into the future or into the past. Hayley voted to go back in time and I voted to go into the future, and the audience was fairly evenly split. Audrey said that she'd asked this question before and had a totally gender-divided response, with all the women voting to go into the past and the men into the future. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/british_library_1-7a9e9c274d.jpg\">\\r\n\u003Ci>Jo Fletcher, John Gribbin, Audrey Niffenegger, Stephen Baxter, Paul Cornell\u003C/i>\\r\n\\r\n\u003C!--more Click here for more write-up under the cut-->\\r\nI thought about it some more later, and stuck with my choice. There's no shortage of material to help me travel into the past by reading, watching old film footage, seeing old photos. Well, it's not exactly time travel, but living in London makes me aware of just how much stuff that experts have archived just in case someone like me might want to find out something about a particular time period. But I have absolutely no idea what might lie ahead, and I'd be well curious. Except I would insist on not bumping into my future self, I would hate to live knowing what was going to happen to me. But I might just have a little peek at the stock market results or the lottery.\\r\n\\r\nOne new way people are going to be able to time travel into the past, I discovered after the talk at the pub, is through a new internet programme called \u003Ca href=\"http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/media/tedglobal2010/\">The Retroscope\u003C/a>, featured at a TED Talk in 2010. Basically, it will work like Google Earth, where you can zoom into places and see not only the location as it is now, but keep clicking back through chronologically ordered images in its history. It hasn't launched yet, but he has a lot of cool and quirky historical stuff on his website, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/\">How To Be a Retronaut\u003C/a>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/british_library_5-d52a6c1e95.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's Jo Fletcher with \u003Cb>Jon Fawcett\u003C/b>, the guy who runs the British Library events that go along with its marvelous exhibitions. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/british_library_4-1b9f6aed5d.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd Time Travel always attracts lovers of \u003Cb>Doctor Who\u003C/b>, and the evening was no exception, with three Doctor Who writers. Here are two of them: \u003Cb>Jonathan Morris\u003C/b> (with his latest book) and \u003Cb>Simon Guerrier\u003C/b>. (The other was Paul Cornell.) \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/british_library_6-bf256bdad0.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere on the left is \u003Cb>John, aka Gaspode\u003C/b>, who, together with his wife, are a big part of organising \u003Ca href=\"http://www.olympus2012.org/\">EasterCon Olympus\u003C/a>, the big sci-fi and fantasy convention near Heathrow Airport.
