A few weeks ago I went back there with Stuart and my parents to stay with my aunt and uncle. In Seldovia, there's a part of the dump where people leave things they think other people might want, so it's actually a lot of fun going there, like a swap meet. Once in 2009, I even found perfectly fitting roller blades, skated, and then brought them back just before I left. (Here's \u003Ca href=\"https://jabberworks.livejournal.com/214902.html\">some art I made\u003C/a> back then, inspired by that.) This time my Aunt Joy had found a wooden bowl at the dump, which was pretty scruffy, with half the varnish worn off, and she thought perhaps I'd be able to do something with it. And with some help from my dad, I did! \\r\n\\r\nHere's Dad sanding down bowl for me to draw on: \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/752021_original-a20fd1bed7.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd the finished bowl! I was pleased how it came out. Seldovia always gives me a bit of space to breathe and make things where there isn't the same deadline pressure. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Ciframe data-link=\"https://vc.videos.livejournal.com/index/player?player=new&record_id=1267140&ad_template_id=9268\" data-thumbnail=\"https://l-stat.livejournal.net/img/flatmedia-nocover-video.png\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https://vc.videos.livejournal.com/index/player?ad_template_id=9268&player=new&player_template_id=3869&record_id=1267140\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\">\u003C/iframe>\\r\n\\r\nTwo years ago when I was in Seldovia, I drew on a lot of rocks for their festival 'Higgy's En Plein Air' art challenge, so this time I drew some more. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/752156_original-48854db92d.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\nWe saw loads of bald eagles in Seldovia, once even nine at the same time (fighting over a fish carcass) from my aunt and uncle's deck on the Slough. But the crows are ever-present, and often they give as good as they get with the enormous eagles, squawking and flying at them and making the eagles turn tail. They're kind of funny, and they sit on the deck a lot and stare at us.  \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/752426_original-235f29e591.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\nHere are a few little paintings I made in advance for the festival Sunday art fair. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/752778_original-79cff0ce47.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\nHere are a couple Alaskan mermaids, with the seagulls, which aren't quite as funny as the crows, they're silly and obnoxious. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/755517_original-d0935a904c.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\nIf you've read my \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.co.uk/pugs-of-the-frozen-north/\">\u003Ci>Pugs of the Frozen North\u003C/i>\u003C/a> with Philip Reeve, you might recognise these stilt houses from one of the scenes in the book, where the Race to the North Pole begins. I didn't really know much about it in advance, but my aunt and mother helped me rustle up some pieces I'd made from years past, mixed with new pictures (a couple simply torn out of my sketchbook), and Vivian Rojas from the festival helped us display them at the Seldovia Harbor Inn cafe. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/754474_original-f4ff4afa3c.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/754854_original-17ef10d0a0.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\nZooming into the little write-up I had with the exhibition, mentioning my new book \u003Ci>\u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.co.uk/grumpycorn/\">Grumpycorn\u003C/a>\u003C/i>, that's dedicated to the people of Seldovia. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/755322_original-8554d924eb.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\\r\n\\r\nGrumpycorn went down very well over there!
