[{"data":1,"prerenderedAt":11},["ShallowReactive",2],{"blog-post-stratford-upon-avon-and-the-killer-book-reading-swans":3},{"_type":4,"body":5,"bodyHtml":6,"excerpt":5,"featuredImage":5,"publishedAt":7,"slug":8,"tags":9,"title":10},"blogPost",null,"Last time I took part in \u003Ca href=\"http://www.stratfordliteraryfestival.co.uk/\">Stratford Literary Festival\u003C/a>, I drew a \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/292905.html\">variation on their logo swan\u003C/a>, so this year I took it one step further, and scribbled this in the cafe: \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/stratlitf12_poster-1736c4793e.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nEvery festival has its highlight, and this time it was getting to meet 7-year-old \u003Cb>Sara Constantin\u003C/b>, who had drawn a half-size facsimile version of \u003Ci>You Can't Eat a Princess\u003C/i>... just just scenes from, but THE ENTIRE BOOK! \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/stratlitf12_sarahconst1-27a6ba0461.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThere's something about copying work I admire that makes me really, really \u003Ci>see\u003C/i> it and understand what the artist was trying to do. I do that a lot when I go to art galleries, with great masterpieces. It's not about trying to 'rip off' Rembrandt or Hergé, or whoever it is - I'm not going to go away and sell my image and pretend its my own - it's about learning and exploring the way the artwork has been created, in utter detail, making my hand do the same lines and work out the same compositions. And when I'm doing it, I feel a sort of companionship with the artist, going over the same lines and shadows that they did, and thinking, \u003Ci>Ah, now I see why you did that\u003C/i>. So I got almost teary to see someone do the same, so extensively, with my own work. That Sara will know my book better than anyone! And it feels rather companionable.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/sarahconst_pspag_cover-9f2e3bd6f2.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nOkay, humour me here, I'm going to show you the WHOLE BOOK because it's so amazing. Sara even drew the endpapers, which are four pages a lot of people would just skip over.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/sarahconst_pspag_2-b802dea4cb.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI was very impressed by seeing her work out the text placement on the page, and she spread the compositions fairly evenly over the pages, right to the edges, which takes some skill. (A lot of kids will draw everything very small in one section of the paper.)\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/sarahconst_pspag_3-3885dba4f5.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nIf you're familiar with \u003Ci>You Can't Eat a Princess!\u003C/i>, written by \u003Ca href=\"http://gillianrogerson.net/\">Gillian Rogerson\u003C/a> and illustrated by me, I think you'll get a kick from Sara's reinterpretation of it. Her characters look slightly different, but they also have their own graphic boldness and liveliness. Remember this kid. If she decides she wants to make books, I think you'll be seeing quite a lot of her. I'm just as impressed with her persistence as her drawing skills. Any kid (or adult) can turn out a few decent images, but being able to stick with the project and FINISH the book is what it really takes. Wow, this kid totally blew me away. Thank you for showing your book to me, Sara! \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/stratlitf12_saraconst2-3fab0f668a.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHa ha, this year's Stratford Lit Fest featured lots of small kids, but lots of VERY TALL PRESENTERS. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/stratlitf12_marchhare-64a8a52de8.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nYou can't tell from the photo, but this is writer \u003Ca href=\"http://www.philipardagh.co.uk/\">Philip Ardagh\u003C/a> and he is 6'7\" tall (that is TWO METRES, as he had the audience repeat several times). Yesterday was the first time I got to see one of his events, and it had me grinning like a loony all the way through. I bought a copy of his \u003Ca href=\"http://www.philipardagh.co.uk/?page_id=477\">\u003Ci>The Eddie Dickens Trilogy\u003C/i>\u003C/a>, illustrated by \u003Ca href=\"http://www.davidrobertsillustration.com/home.html\">David Roberts\u003C/a> and now bound together in one lovely red volume. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/stratlitf12_sarahphil-66cdd11448.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd here's fabulous \u003Ca href=\"http://www.meimatsuoka.com\">Mei Matsuoka\u003C/a>! She led her group in making these pom-pom sheep to go along with her picture book \u003Ca href=\"http://www.andersenpress.co.uk/books/view/1849392072\">\u003Ci>The Great Sheep Shenanigans\u003C/i>\u003C/a>. Check out this DRESS!! This is storyteller \u003Ca href=\"http://www.thestoryteller.me.uk/\">Nikky Smedley\u003C/a>, who had the audience captivated with her funny, quirky and lyrical tales, as well as her frock. I loved how the dress doubled up as a stage, what a cool idea, even if it does make pacing about a bit difficult. (She's very good with the arm gestures.)\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/stratlitf12_seadress-36b9308299.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI wasn't lucky enough to meet \u003Ca href=\"http://www.robertcrowtherpopsup.co.uk/\">Robert Crowther\u003C/a>, but I could see some great results from his pop-up books workshop.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/stratlitf12_popups-ccd07251ca.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd our group made pirates!
