[{"data":1,"prerenderedAt":11},["ShallowReactive",2],{"blog-post-shadow-puppets-on-the-south-bank":3},{"_type":4,"body":5,"bodyHtml":6,"excerpt":5,"featuredImage":5,"publishedAt":7,"slug":8,"tags":9,"title":10},"blogPost",null,"\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/flyboy1-47fcb5eae1.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nLast night \u003Ca href=\"http://www.vivianschwarz.co.uk\">Viviane\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.garynorthfield.co.uk\">Gary\u003C/a> and I celebrated moving into our new studio, where we went to see a performance on the south bank by Viv's friend and art school classmate \u003Ca href=\"http://www.sadlucy.com/matthewrobins.html\">Matthew Robins\u003C/a>, his partner and puppeteer Tim Spooner and a band of musicians. The show was wonderfully low-tech: Matthew played piano and sang the story, while Tim worked organisational magic, getting all the little bits of paper onto the screen for the first story, and in the third story, using layers of video projection, paper backgrounds and puppets. The enormous concrete chimney of the National Theatre made an amazing screen.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/nt-1075e316f6.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's Viv with Matthew in the bar afterward:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/flyboy7-8065cad7b7.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nMatthew was talking about the low-tech elements of the show, and how he'd had to convince his talented musicians not to sound 'too good', more like a high school band. He has a lot of writing and cutting-out work still to do; the group are doing a different show at the NT for the next four weekends and he still has to come up with next week's story, \u003Ci>Flyboy and the Haunted Horse\u003C/i>. He also commented that a lot of people compare his lettering to \u003Ca href=\"http://www.misterrob.co.uk\">Rob Ryan\u003C/a>'s, but wryly said that, unless people make a serious effort to do a very fancy font, letters cut out of paper just tend to look like that. (Which I think is true, \u003Ca href=\"http://chamonkee.livejournal.com/\" class=\"lj-user\">chamonkee\u003C/a> often does similar lettering and I'm pretty sure he hasn't been influenced by Rob Ryan.) I'm surprised Matthew hasn't been snatched up by a picture book publisher yet, his work would transfer almost seamlessly to printed books.\\r\n\\r\nHere's the schedule at the \u003Ca href=\"http://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/?lid=48069\">National Theatre\u003C/a>. So we were glad for the chance to chill out for the evening.
