It doesn't play a large role in the story at all, but I think it might show up on the front endpapers and possibly the second full-page illustration. So I turned to the Internet and this was one of the first images I pulled up. There's something about the uprightness of the man - he looks almost like a vicar - and the cringing kid in the back that made me laugh.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Ca href=\"http://www.ssplprints.com/image/112664/unattributed-man-with-two-boys-in-amphibious-vehicle-22-april-1971\">\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/amphibious_1-1cccd806e0.jpg\">\u003C/a>\\r\n\\r\nI started out designing the Explorermobile as an amphibious craft. It's a slightly hokey version of that one used in \u003Ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-Tdmxx54PY\">the river chase scene\u003C/a> in \u003Ci>The World is Not Enough\u003C/i>, where James Bond makes it dive underwater, then adjusts his tie. \\r\n\\r\nPresenting... EXPLORERMOBILE MARK 1\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/seawigs_explorermob_mach1-d730c0b134.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI was looking at these, an Amphibious Volkswagen and a Trippel S.G. 6 Schwimkraftwagen from 1942. I liked the thought that the Crisp family might have found it in a swamp somewhere and refurbished it, or just found a place where people maintained and still drove these things, like 1950's American cars in Cuba, or the wonderful \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindustan_Ambassador\">Ambassador cars\u003C/a> in India. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Ca href=\"http://www.lonesentry.com/ordnance/tag/amphibious\">\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/amphibious_2-eb7faa6224.jpg\">\u003C/a>\\r\n\\r\nBut I looked at the story more closely, and realised the Explorermobile is more of a caravan, something the Crisps could have lived out of, because they're constantly on the move. So Mach 1 just wasn't large enough or family-friendly enough. Here's the family-version variation on the first design.\\r\n\\r\nEXPLORERMOBILE MARK 2\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/seawigs_explorermob_mach2-5844dcb450.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHa ha, I was happy as a clam designing these things. I texted photos of some to my studio mate, Lauren (who wasn't there at the time), and she texted back, \u003Ci>Are you making Vroom Vroom noises?\u003C/i> I got really into researching old caravans, and Philip sent me a link to some Dormobiles. I never even heard of those! Look how cool this one is:\\r\n\\r\n\u003C!--more Click here for lots more under the cut!-->\\r\n\u003Ca href=\"http://dayerses.com/bedford-dormobile.html\">\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/dormobile_1-762bf89ad3.jpg\">\u003C/a>\\r\n\\r\nSo I tried an explorer version of the Bedford:\\r\n\\r\nEXPLORERMOBILE MARK 3\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/seawigs_explorermob_mach3-05d3804008.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThen Philip gave an excellent suggestion, why not try a caravan with a half track? \u003Ci>Half tracks are cool!\u003C/i> Philip really likes tank tracks, his Mortal Engines cities all run on them. So let's try it, here's a Bedford on a half track:\\r\n\\r\nEXPLORERMOBILE MARK 4\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/seawigs_explorermob_mach3b-2c367d8b14.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nOo, not too bad! But what about those iconic American caravans, the Airstream? \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/airstream_1-df5881e3b7.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nWhat would an Airstream look like on a half track? Gosh, it does look very militaristic. Maybe I could sort that out with a few patterned curtains or something.\\r\n\\r\nEXPLORERMOBILE MARK 5\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/seawigs_explorermob_mach4-5ccd15d5a9.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThen, predictably, I got a bit lost in Google images. CUTE LITTLE YELLOW CAMPERVANS. And I discovered a website called \u003Ca href=\"http://tinyhouseblog.com/\">TIny House Blog\u003C/a> that I really want to go back and read more thoroughly.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/caravan_4-2c98f4d65c.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd then it was getting late and I started to get a bit silly. What if the campervan had Mrs Crisp driving a massive Harley Davidson attachment on the front, with a half track and a side car for Oliver? Hurrah!\\r\n\\r\nEXPLORERMOBILE MARK 6\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/seawigs_explorermob_mach5-02dc92ac29.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThat last one doesn't work so well in the context of the story, but it was awfully fun to draw. Awesome side car. But a... STEALTH WINNEBAGO? My sister and I watched this last time she was visiting me and we laughed our heads off. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Clj-embed id=\"1838\"/>\\r\n\\r\nAnd thus, you see how one little part of an illustration can take up almost an entire day, without even having done any final artwork.
