I was curious to see if the \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosplay\">cosplay\u003C/a> costumes could live up to those you get at London's 60,000-people strong \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/tag/mcm%20expo\">MCM Expo\u003C/a>. And while I think London still rocks the costume scene, Paris had some great looks! \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/starwarsprincess-5870384736.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nEmma was such a help to me a few years ago when I started doing events; at the \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/192253.html\">Crystal Palace Children's Book Festival\u003C/a>, she taught a whole bunch of us creators how to lead comic-making workshops for children. She's very good at it! Emma was launching the French edition of her book, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.aaltair.eu/index.php?lang=fr&page=dragon_heir\">\u003Ci>Dragon Heir Reborn\u003C/i>\u003C/a> with a new publisher called \u003Ca href=\"http://www.aaltair.eu/index.php?lang=fr&page=accueil\">Aaltaïr\u003C/a>, run by \u003Cb>Guillaume Bresch\u003C/b> and \u003Cb>Patrick Chaduc\u003C/b>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/paris_manga_table-16c24e0365.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThe guy I drew behind us is \u003Cb>Julien Aubert\u003C/b>, who's done some games development with Aaltaïr and was so nice and helpful during the show. (He even brought macaroons!)\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/paris_manga_table-1-e7bc51b831.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nOn our first night at dinner, Emma got to see the lovely new edition of her book, it was very exciting! \u003Cb>I asked Guillaume about why he'd decided to set up a small, independent publisher.\u003C/b> He said he'd always been interested in movies, video games and books, but there's something he loves about books, they've been around for thousands of years and he thinks they'll keep existing in some form for thousands more. He has several projects of his own he'd like to publish, possibly even before the end of the year, but he's also open to new work by other people, and has set up several different labels: \u003Cb>Aaltaïr\u003C/b> for comics, \u003Cb>Hikoboshi\u003C/b> for manga (which are also comics... putting us back into Emma's controversial territory: what's the difference between comics and manga, and is there a difference?), and he's considering a third label for limited print runs of 50 books or so. The most important thing is storytelling, he said, so he's open to other projects besides comics, such as children's picture books, and he's already published \u003Ca href=\"http://www.aaltair.eu/index.php?lang=en&page=peterpan\">\u003Ci>Peter Pan\u003C/i>\u003C/a> as a chapter book, illustrated by \u003Cb>Charles Vess\u003C/b>. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/dragon_heir_guillaume-eac9c79e0c.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nGuillaume first met Emma when went to the same show three years ago, and then saw her twice at the \u003Ca href=\"http://www.thecomicsshow.co.uk\">British International Comics Show\u003C/a> (BICS) in Birmingham, where she was launching the English version of \u003Ci>Dragon Heir Reborn\u003C/i> with her colleagues at \u003Ca href=\"http://www.sweatdrop.com/shop/id84_Dragon-Heir-Reborn\">Sweatdrop Studios\u003C/a>. \\r\n\\r\nI asked him about his books' distribution, and he said they'll be stocked by \u003Ca href=\"http://www.fnac.com/\">FNAC\u003C/a> (which he compared to HMV in Britain), and he's approached other bookshops which have agreed to take it. In the St Michel district of Paris, these include \u003Ca href=\"http://www.album.fr/\">Album\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.mangacafe.fr/\">Manga Cafe\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"http://www.nautiljon.com/boutiques/paris/manga+shop+little+tokyo,224.html\">Little Tokyo\u003C/a>. Lots of drawing!\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/paris_manga_wall1-c25f647968.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/paris_manga_wall2-cc78fbcf82.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nSo who drew this fabulous picture of Emma and me? \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/nacho_fernandez_sarahemma-ba935afec2.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nIt was the other writer and artist at our table, a lovely Spaniard named \u003Ca href=\"http://nachomon.deviantart.com/gallery/7001598?offset=0\">Nacho Fernandez\u003C/a>. Here's Nacho's dedication in my copy of his new book, translated from the Spanish bu Aaltaïr (under the Hikoboshki label), \u003Ca href=\"http://www.aaltair.eu/index.php?lang=fr&page=chevaliers\">\u003Ci>Chevaliers de l'Horoscope\u003C/i>\u003C/a>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/nacho_fernandez_dedicasse-3c2cd8da40.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nA bit of fan art from me:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/nacho_fernandez_fanart-4c9a50d1d1.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nNacho's book was a HUGE hit with the expo goers; he sat there drawing \u003Ci>dedicasses\u003C/i> for two solid days, in well over a hundred books. He didn't get time to draw many commissions (perhaps two?), but here's him drawing one:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/nacho_fernandez_drawing-3058f82ee1.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd the last morning at a cafe, he gave me a picture of Lettuce from my \u003Ci>Vern and Lettuce\u003C/i>, hurrah!\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/nacho_fernandez_lettuce-1156761bab.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI also got to see another one of his books, \u003Ci>\u003Ca href=\"http://www.edicionesglenat.es/catalogo/comic/popcorn/kung-fu-mousse/1\">Kung Fu Mousse\u003C/i>\u003C/a>, which had beautiful drawing and colouring; I would \u003Ci>love\u003C/i> to read this book in English! He has some amazing stuff displayed on his \u003Ca href=\"http://artpostal.com\">Art Postal website\u003C/a>, several by artists whose work you'll recognise. He gave me a spaceman stamp, so I drew a Princess Spaghetti planet scene.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/proust_art_postal-15edf56c98.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's a beautiful old fold-out, pop-up envelope he had in his folder; I think he said it was sent by a serviceman from Japan to his wife in France, just after WW2. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/art_postal_2-1c757ff6b0.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAll these kids are gathered around a screen showing the theme tunes from anime and gaming videos they grew up with. They got \u003Ci>SO\u003C/i> into it, cheering for their favourites like a rock star had just come on stage. Sadly, the only one I knew well enough to sing along was \u003Ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI\">\u003Ci>Still Alive\u003C/i>\u003C/a> from \u003Ci>Portal\u003C/i>, but Emma knew loads of them, many from spending some of her childhood in Italy. She, Guillaume and Nacho had a long talk over lunch on the Monday, about how some of these Japanese anime series are absolutely massive on European telly but somehow never make it into English language and on to English screens; if they do, it's usually through an American intermediary.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/paris_manga_anime_crowd-dfb75d6575.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd, of course, we have to have some good cosplay photos. Emma had a bag with some big-eyed manga girls printed on it, and I'd seen so many of them that I had a good laugh drawing Nacho that way. (And made Emma roll her eyes when I said I was 'drawing manga'. She didn't say it, yet again, but I could feel her thinking, \u003Ci>That's just ONE kind of manga!\u003C/i>) But doesn't he look purdy? ^___^\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/nacho_fernandez_belle-2b80714f10.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nDuring the two days of the festival, we only went between the expo centre at the Port de Versaille and the hotel complex, which had some good restaurants. Both the centre and hotel were outside the main Paris ring road and were so concrete and modern that, except for the fact everyone spoke French, we could have been somewhere near London's Docklands, or anywhere, really. Emma and I had a good view of the tram lines from our hotel window. Here is before and after the snow. Gosh, it was cold in Paris.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/paris_hotel-ae41dd00a9.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThis sushi bar near the hotel was very tasty, but the door kept blowing open and we thought we'd freeze. But Guillaume and his uncle/business partner, Patrick, were excellent hosts and fed us SO WELL. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/aaltair_sushi-746aef3ab9.jpg\">\">\\r\n\\r\nWe did get out of the concrete jungle for a bit, though; Guillaume took us on a pretty little tram tour along the river, then out for a lunch of savoury and sweet crêpes in the city centre, so we were able to feel we were properly in Paris.
