Here's the floor featuring \u003Ca href=\"http://www.mckean-art.co.uk/\">Dave McKean\u003C/a>'s very site-specific work. He arranged it so there were lots of places you could see something cool just if you looked at it from an exact perspective. One view was through this mask. I was riding a weird wave of being hyperactive and tired-out by a full day in Birmingham at the \u003Ca href=\"http://www.peters-books.co.uk/\">the Peters Bookselling Services\u003C/a>. Basically it's this massive storeroom full of children's and young adult books that sell to libraries in vast quantities. All three of my publishers were there, but I was officially with Oxford University Press and doing my shpeil for my upcoming adventure picture book \u003Ca href=\"http://www.jabberworks.co.uk/new/titus.html\">\u003Ci>When Titus Took the Train\u003C/a>\u003C/i>. It was such a funny format... \u003Cb>Librarian Speed Dating!\u003C/b> The two OUP publicists and I had five minutes at our booth to say our bit to a group of about five librarians. At the end of the time, \u003Ci>The Archers\u003C/i> theme tune would play and the next group of librarians would pile in and we'd do it all over again. Fortunately we also got a nice lunch and I got to meet Facebook buddy \u003Ca href=\"http://www.carylhart.com\">Caryl Hart\u003C/a> and the writers \u003Ca href=\"http://www.marksworks.co.uk/\">Graham Marks\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/book/4909/Quicksilver-by-Samira-Osman.html\">Samira Osman\u003C/a> and another one named Dave (with lovely blond curly hair, a fab striped shirt, and I cannot remember his last name for the life of me, hehe). \\r\n\\r\nI was really uncertain about the politics of the whole thing, whether I could talk about \u003Ci>Vern and Lettuce\u003C/i> when I was with OUP. But Camilla, their accounts person, was actually waving around a copy of my \u003Ci>You Can't Eat a Princess!\u003C/i> book with Scholatic, so I shyly stuck \u003Ci>Vern and Lettuce\u003C/i> up right at the beginning of my super-fast dating talk and they didn't seem to mind at all. (But there wasn't any time actually to confer with them about it between groups.) I've had several publicists tell me that, even though they're competition, they all get along very well, and they often e-mail each other about scheduling and try to work around my books with other publishers. In fact, they tend to swap around jobs fairly frequently, so they're often among friends at these events. (One of my Scholastic publicists, Catherine, had just been one of my Random House publicists until a few months ago, so she knows my stuff very well!) I think I make politic mistakes quite often, but I think they know I mean well and they're nice about catching me gently when I clump over people's toes. \\r\n\\r\nOkay, back to HyperComics, where I was pretty much twigging out and hungry, but still glad to see people:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/hypercomics18-6b2df7b177.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nStudio mates \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ILYA\">Ed Hillyer\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodrow_Phoenix\">Woodrow Phoenix\u003C/a> with \u003Ca href=\"http://warrenpleece.wordpress.com/\">Warren Pleece\u003C/a> wedged in between, along with the guy on the right whom I just met, \u003Cb>Etienne Gilfillan\u003C/b>, who works for the \u003Ci>Fortean Times\u003C/i> and makes comics for French comics magazine \u003Ci>Spirou\u003C/i>. (The first magazine I usually buy whenever I go to Belgium or France.)\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/hypercomics19-f85ae14eb7.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nFrom left, \u003Cb>Sarah Lightman\u003C/b>, a coordinator of Laydeez Do Comics (\u003Ca href=\"http://www.nikjep.demon.co.uk/laywhen.htm\">which features Darryl Cunningham at its next meeting on Mon, 23 Aug\u003C/a>), a mystery man(?),  \u003Cb>John Dunning\u003C/b> (writer of \u003Ci>Salem Brownstone\u003C/i> and the guy who did one of my first festival events with me, at Cheltenham last year), \u003Cb>\u003Ca href=\"http://www.johnriordan.co.uk/\">John Riordan\u003C/a>\u003C/b> and far right, \u003Cb>Paul Gravett\u003C/b>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/hypercomics10-753127f285.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThe nearby boathouse featured work by several other people: \u003Cb>Sean Azzopardi\u003C/b>, \u003Cb>Ellen Lindner\u003C/b>, \u003Cb>Joe Decie\u003C/b>, \u003Cb>John Cei Douglas\u003C/b>, \u003Cb>Douglas Noble\u003C/b> and \u003Cb>Paul O'Connell\u003C/b>. This part of the exhibtion was titled \u003Ci>Hieronymus Pop: Scenes from an imaginary rock and roll concert\u003C/i>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/hypercomics14-ea81e421a7.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's my studio mate \u003Ca href=\"http://www.littlewhitebird.com\">Ellen Lindner\u003C/a> and me in our unintentionally-but-marvelously-matched frocks:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/hypercomics2-bfb03e0120.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI'm so impressed, Ellen's managed to raise over $1,000 from 55 backers toward publishing our zine. I'm not utterly sold on the title (\u003Ci>Whores of Mensa\u003C/i>, taken from a Woody Allen short story) but there are going to be some fab comics in there, including a recent addition from \u003Ca href=\"http://patriceaggs.com/\">Patrice Aggs\u003C/a>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/hypercomics9-a5ae1ccf33.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cb>Nicky Tesco\u003C/b> and \u003Cb>Francesca Cassavetti\u003C/b>.
