[{"data":1,"prerenderedAt":11},["ShallowReactive",2],{"blog-post-happy-boxing-day":3},{"_type":4,"body":5,"bodyHtml":6,"excerpt":5,"featuredImage":5,"publishedAt":7,"slug":8,"tags":9,"title":10},"blogPost",null,"Heh heh, I bet you were expecting cosy Christmas photos, not a drawing of a fat Nazi. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/august_sander1-8b3c340417.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nToday Stuart and I met up with some friends at the Tate Modern and I was rather transfixed by an exhibition of historical portraits by German photographer \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_Sander\">August Sander\u003C/a>. Some of the faces and outfits were brilliant. \\r\n\\r\n\u003C!--more More drawings and photos under the cut-->\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/august_sanders2-241cc856bd.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI copied a of the photos few straight out into my notebook without using pencil, which I like doing sometimes. I never quite know what I'm going to get, so I draw very differently, a bit recklessly. ('Ah well, that line's down, nothing I can do about it...') I didn't really feel I got into the swing of it until I was drawing the third page (the fat Nazi).\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/august_sanders3-a04f9942c8.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nWe visited Chinese artist \u003Cb>Ai WeiWei\u003C/b>'s exhibition of \u003Ca href=\"http://www.tate.org.uk/modern/exhibitions/unileverseries2010/default.shtm\">Sunflower Seeds\u003C/a> in the Turbine Hall. It was pretty amazing, a whole lot of very busy Chinese people painted \u003Cb>100 million\u003C/b> little porcelain pieces to look just like sunflower seeds. Yup, that's a lot of seeds. The museum used to allow visitors to walk on them, but the seeds were kicking up dust and the museum thought it might be hazardous, so you can only look at them now. But it's quite something, looking at that many individually painted items. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/tate8-6bd2434e1e.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/tate7-2064bd8bdb.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nThey had a video response thing you could record, and, true to form, I just hit 'record' without gathering a single thought in my head. Our friend Alisdair gave a much more thoughtful response which you \u003Ca href=\"http://aiweiwei.tate.org.uk/content/725912830001\">can watch here\u003C/a> on the Tate website. I bought a pretty little map book in the Tate bookshop, \u003Ci>\u003Cb>Maps\u003C/i> by Nigel Peake\u003C/b>, which you can \u003Ca href=\"http://www.secondstreet.co.uk/maps.html\">pretty much read online here\u003C/a>. I love maps.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/tate9-0feb54fd1b.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAlong the way, you'd see a replica of Francis Drake's ship, \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Hind\">\u003Ci>The Golden Hind\u003C/i>\u003C/a>. I boarded this ship when I was a teenager and it was docked in Seattle, which proves it can really sail and isn't just a bit of decorative fluff.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/tate4-503c1bca4d.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nSpeaking of lovely walks, there's a \u003Ca href=\"http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12060599\">great video here\u003C/a> with some photos from \u003Cb>Highgate Cemetery\u003C/b> that Stuart just found on the BBC website. It includes \u003Cb>Jean Pateman\u003C/b>, former chairman of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery, to whom the writer Audrey Niffenegger dedicated \u003Ci>Her Fearful Symmetry\u003C/i> and who appears as Jessica in the book. (Here's my post from earlier in the year about \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/301205.html\">the book and the cemetery\u003C/a>.)\\r\n\\r\n\u003Ca href=\"http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12060599\">\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/highgate-edfaa87c03.jpg\">\u003C/a>\\r\n\\r\nAnd Christmas photos. In the late morning, Stuart and I cycled over to see Dave and James and have some bubbly. Here's \u003Ca href=\"http://www.scribblehound.com\">David O'Connell\u003C/a> and me; we should have a picture book (based on a comic we made) coming out with David Fickling next Christmas, if all goes to schedule.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/davidoconnell_sarahmcintyre-4588652353.jpg\">\\r\n\u003Cfont size=\"1\">\u003Ci>David O'Connell and Sarah McIntyre\u003C/i>\u003C/font>\\r\n\\r\nAnd we had an amazing turkey dinner with all the trimmings in Greenwich, over at the house of our Kiwi friends \u003Ca href=\"http://heatherkilgour.com/\">Heather Kilgour\u003C/a> and her partner Perraine. Heather writes and illustrates picture books, but her training's in sculpture, and she worked on a lot of the city and elvish landscapes for the \u003Ci>Lord of the Rings\u003C/i> film trilogy. So she has lots of good stories about the sets and how you can make anything out of foam.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/heather_perraine-455addef70.jpg\">\\r\n\u003Cfont size=\"1\">\u003Ci>Sarah, Perraine, Heather, Stuart\u003C/i>\u003C/font>\\r\n\\r\nOkay, and the rest of these photos are probably only of interest to people who know me from Moscow days, but several of them read this blog, so here you can see the Walkers and us (and say the inevitable 'my, haven't they grown' type things. The kids, I mean.)
