[{"data":1,"prerenderedAt":11},["ShallowReactive",2],{"blog-post-guibert-benoit":3},{"_type":4,"body":5,"bodyHtml":6,"excerpt":5,"featuredImage":5,"publishedAt":7,"slug":8,"tags":9,"title":10},"blogPost",null,"\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/comica1-629d0a4965.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nLast night I went to the French Institute in London to hear a talk by two of France's top comics creators, \u003Cb>Ted Benoit\u003C/b> and \u003Cb>Emmanuel Guibert\u003C/b> as part of the \u003Ca href=\"http://www.paulgravett.com/comica/comica08/comica08.htm\">Comica\u003C/a> series. While I was in Provence a couple months ago, I saw lots of old copies of \u003Ci>Blake and Mortimer\u003C/i> series for sale in the markets, so I was a little bit aware of his work, but Guibert is a new find for me. There was a rush for seats at the start, so I sat at the back with \u003Ca href=\"http://tozocomic.livejournal.com/\" class=\"lj-user\">tozocomic\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://rainboworchid.livejournal.com/\" class=\"lj-user\">rainboworchid\u003C/a> and his wife Ellie, \u003Ca href=\"http://maartjeschalkx.blogspot.com\">Maartje Schalkx\u003C/a>, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.sarahlightman.com\">Sarah Lightman\u003C/a>, a Scotsman named Euan and Catrina MacLeod, who's doing her PhD on women in comics. Since I could catch glimpses of the overhead screen but couldn't see the speakers from there, I did a lot of doodling in my notes:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/comica_notes-b2bc247dd9.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHave a look at some of \u003Ca href=\"http://www.fevrierandco.com/ted-benoit/index.htm\">Ted Benoit's artwork here\u003C/a>. I was interested by Benoit's fascination with 1950s America, and his assertion that 'Americans don't draw America very well', that their pictures are 'too dramatic', while he likes a more documentary style look at the landscape which he only finds in underground comics there. He cited American influences on his work, particularly Robert Crumb, and talked about his conscious decision to take on Herge's style of \u003Ci>ligne claire\u003C/i> drawing; he didn't see it as copying, more that Hergé's established style can be used as a tool, like a pen.\\r\n\\r\nGuibert turned out to be a captivating speaker. I was very moved by his description of getting to know an old American soldier, Alan, and the depth of their relationship as Guibert listened to Alan tell stories of wartime, and later, his childhood, up to the time he died. Guibert has produced three books about the man, now compiled into one,  \u003Ci>La Guerre d'Alan\u003C/i>, and he's also going to come out with a book about Alan's childhood. Here's one Guibert did for Euan, a real masterpiece.
