Here she is with comics artist \u003Ca href=\"http://simonfraser.posterous.com/blog/\">Simon Fraser\u003C/a> (whom Stuart and I first met with his brother in a Chinese restaurant in his native Inverness during \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/283405.html\">Hi-Ex Comic Con\u003C/a>).  \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/ellenstudio_simon_fraser-d8bf3aea23.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd I can report back that Ellen is well and working hard on a new graphic novel. And not only that, but the indie comics magazine she edits and contributes to, \u003Ca href=\"http://strumpetcomic.com/\">\u003Ci>The Strumpet\u003C/i>\u003C/a>, just exceeded its Kickstarter fundraising goal, by almost double the necessary amount! \\r\n\\r\n\u003Ca href=\"http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2019502594/the-strumpet-2-a-second-transoceanic-blaze-of-comi\">\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/strumpet_kickstarter-6dd5ce13b1.jpg\">\u003C/a>\\r\n\\r\nYou can come along to its UK launch at London's \u003Ca href=\"http://www.orbitalcomics.com/\">Orbital Comics\u003C/a> on Friday, 9 Nov, a joint event with the launch of the excellent \u003Ca href=\"http://inkpluspaper.com/\">\u003Ci>ink+PAPER\u003C/i>\u003C/a>, edited by \u003Ca href=\"http://scribblehound.com/\">David O'Connell\u003C/a>, (creator of the upcoming \u003Ci>Monster & Chips\u003C/i> with HarperCollins). I posted this photo \u003Ca href=\"https://twitter.com/scottmccloud/status/259365413694083072\">on Twitter\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"http://scottmccloud.com/\">Scott McCloud\u003C/a> apologised for making her chalkboard unwashable during a visit with his comics diagramming. \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/ellenstudio_scott_mccloud-bd1cf16a69.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nIf you make comics, you'll undoubtedly know about Scott's books about comics and how they work (written in comic format), which have become a sort of bible in the industry. (Here he is, giving a \u003Ca href=\"http://www.ted.com/talks/scott_mccloud_on_comics.html\">TED Talk\u003C/a> on the subject.) If you're interested in learning more about comics, these books are a great place to start, and should be a part of every school and community library.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Ca href=\"http://scottmccloud.com/2-print/index.html\">\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/scott_mccloud_books-30786bad23.jpg\">\u003C/a>\\r\n\\r\nAnd now, turning the lens to Simon Fraser! \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/simon_fraser_desk-e6001f7f13.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nI hadn't actually seen much of his work, but among British comics lovers, Simon is legend for his prodigious outpouring for the \u003Ca href=\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolai_Dante\">\u003Ci>Nikolai Dante\u003C/a>\u003C/i> comics. The story recently came to an end, and you can read \u003Ca href=\"http://simonfraser.posterous.com/144265551\">Simon's blog post about it here\u003C/a>.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/simon_fraser_titles-92a512076d.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHe let me take a few snapshots of the work on his desk. Here's a pencil rough for a comic about a futuristic Cuba:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/simon_fraser_pencils-6a691ae970.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nHere's a more detailed panel, with this machine keeping Castro alive and in power:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/simon_fraser_pencil_panel-c3fde80a87.jpg\">\\r\n\\r\nAnd an inked page. Simon:'Argh, another crowd scene!' I only peeked briefly at their desks, but there was some good stuff going on there.
