[{"data":1,"prerenderedAt":11},["ShallowReactive",2],{"blog-post-bishops-stortford-picture-book-award-2011":3},{"_type":4,"body":5,"bodyHtml":6,"excerpt":5,"featuredImage":5,"publishedAt":7,"slug":8,"tags":9,"title":10},"blogPost",null,"Yesterday morning I met \u003Ca href=\"http://unitedagents.co.uk/giles-andreae\">Giles Andreae\u003C/a> at Liverpool Street Station and we took the train up to Bishop's Stortford, where last year our book \u003Ca href=\"http://www.jabberworks.co.uk/new/morris2.html\">\u003Ci>Morris the Mankiest Monster\u003C/i>\u003C/a> won the Bishop's Stortford Picture Book Award. (I blogged about last year \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/272418.html?thread=2267682\">here\u003C/a> and \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/273698.html\">here\u003C/a>.) \\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/bishopssto8-f3467d53b5.jpg\">\\r\n\u003Cfont size=\"1\">\u003Ci>Giles Andreae & Sarah McIntyre\u003C/i>\u003C/font>\\r\n\\r\nWe both led a couple workshops at Bishop's Stortford College, then Giles presented this year's award. But first he gave gave a talk and told a few of his own stories, including one which I filmed here, \u003Ci>\u003Cb>The Knitting Gorilla\u003C/i>\u003C/b>:\\r\n\\r\n\u003Clj-embed id=\"611\"/>\\r\n\u003Ca href=\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDKafdAfON8\">\u003Ci>Giles Andreae YouTube link\u003C/a>\u003C/i>\\r\n\\r\nLots of writer and illustrators came up for the award ceremony, including \u003Ca href=\"http://jabberworks.livejournal.com/346149.html\">Gillian Rogerson\u003C/a>! Our book, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.jabberworks.co.uk/new/princess.html\">\u003Ci>You Can't Eat a Princess\u003C/i>\u003C/a> was shortlisted, but unfortunately this year only came in fourth place. (Still, not bad, there was a huge long list.) Here she is, having come down from Leeds, with Scholastic editor \u003Cb>Ellie Parkin\u003C/b>. Ellie's originally from the north like Gillian, but talks like a Londoner... until the two of them get together; I couldn't help grinning as Ellie's voice starting lilting all over the place.\\r\n\\r\n\u003Cimg src=\"https://images.jabberworks.co.uk/lj/bishopsstor1-d09addbb60.jpg\">\\r\n\u003Cfont size=\"1\">\u003Ci>Ellie Parkin & Gillian Rogerson\u003C/i>\u003C/font>\\r\n\\r\nAnd the winner this year was \u003Ca href=\"http://www.hodderchildrens.co.uk/PICTURE-BOOKS__DAVE_9780340970379_P_book.htm\">\u003Ci>Dave\u003C/i>\u003C/a> by illustrator \u003Ca href=\"http://www.lizpichon.co.uk/\">Liz Pichon\u003C/a> (who's also a writer) and writer \u003Ca href=\"http://www.thebrightagency.com/artists/view/37\">Sue Hendra\u003C/a> (who's also an illustrator). Their book stars a fat ginger cat who gets stuck in a cat flap until he eats so many baked beans that he manages to blast his way out by farting. I didn't have to plan anything; about fifty kids sat around me and spent half an hour telling me how much they liked my book and why. It was amazing! I think did a fair bit of blushing, but it was marvelous getting such in-depth feedback. I came out with my head two hat sizes larger. I'm hoping some of them might contribute pages to \u003Cb>Vern and Lettuce's online magazine, \u003Ca href=\"http://www.picklerye.com/\">\u003Ci>The Pickle\u003C/i>\u003C/a>\u003C/b>.
