Today I went to my little friend Dulcie’s ballet recital, held in the brand-new theatre at Alleyn’s School in Dulwich. I hadn’t been to the school for awhile, since my neighbour kid friend grew up, but in the old theatre building, I’d seen Bugsy Malone (my friend played Tallulah!), Carousel, On the Razzle and a Kafka play.
Ballet’s the best thing for making action sketches, even if it’s dark and there’s never time to draw more than a few lines of each figure. (Here are some sketches I made earlier in the year of adult dancers… oh! And photos of me in pink ballet gear, ha ha.)
The kids all dressed as different sweets. (Dulcie was a Rhubarb & Custard boiled sweet, something I don’t think we ever had in America.)
After the show, the star of the ballet, her mother and I had a celebratory hot chocolate while she watched the video I’d shot.
