late night flu doodles

Today was a cheery kind of day. I had the flu and felt so wretched that I just laid around moaning, trying not to breathe in the stench from the colossal fire from the explosions at the chemical factory two streets away, and reading Nick Hornby’s book, ‘A Long Way Down’, about suicidal people. Then I couldn’t sleep because I’d been lying around all day, so I made these sketches in the wan little light of my desk lamp. (I am somewhat proud of my multi-tasking ability to feel sorry for myself and draw rodent-like things at the same time.)

Ooh, in my clueless state of melodramatic illness, I didn’t even realise they’d evacuated the neighbourhood until I looked up the explosion link just now… Oh, well. I think I’ll go make myself a hot drink.
