happy birthday, rian hughes

I don’t usually paint birthday cards for people because it gets expectations too high and I’d spend all my time making cards. But the thought of drawing Rian Hughes as a Dan Dare type character eating cake tickled my fancy and I had to turn it into a morning sketch. Our illustrations are almost polar opposites from each other’s; Rian’s are very slick and exacting about period design elements and mine are full of foibles and wobbles and a mishmash of styles. But he’s a real kindred spirit when it comes to tea and cakes.

Which reminds me, I once did a pinky birthday picture for another Hughes, but I don’t think they’re related.

    Fantastic!

I really like the way you have drawn pointy ends for the sofa and table legs – very Rianesque despite it overall being so ‘you’! I hope he has a very happy birthday.

It’s now propped up at home on my sideboard, Sarah – thanks for a lovely piece!
(There’s something unnerving about the way I’m about to pluck that cherry, though..)
